This tour of the historic center of Florence encompasses some of the most beautiful churches and cathedrals this city has to offer, including its magnificent Duomo with the instantly recognisable Brunelleschi's Dome.
What will I do?
The tour begins in the bustling Piazza San Giovanni, where the Gothic Loggia del Bigallo overlooks the Duomo's baptistery.
After taking in the beautiful octagonal baptistery, one of the oldest buildings in Florence, with its mesmerizing Porta del Paradiso (Gates of Paradise) that depict biblical scenes in gilded panels. Then we'll continue our walk, taking in the various amazing complex monuments that surround Florence's religious center.
Our first stop is by the Cathedral's amazing Brunelleschi's Dome. Higher and wider than any dome constructed in the 15th century, it is now a landmark of the city known the world over. We'll walk around the Duomo to the elegant Giotto bell tower, Florence's most prestigious tall tower that still houses bells that date back as far as the early 18th century.
The walk continues along Via Calzaioli in the heart of the city. There, we'll admire the gothic Orsanmichele church, which is decorated with beautifully detailed shrines and statues of the patron saints who catered to the medieval trade guilds. From there, we'll stroll over to the popular Mercato della Paglia (Straw Market) where you may rub the nose of the famous bronze boar and toss a coin into the fountain for luck! As we continue our walk, you'll stride alongside the majestic Ponte Vecchio, the oldest bridge in Florence and one of the most famous in the world. Overlooking il Ponte Vecchio are a number of charming jewelry shops, restaurants, and stores that will really give you an insight into Florentine life.
Our final stop is Piazza Signoria, Florence's historic political center and the site of Ammannati's imposing fountain of Neptune. The Piazza also houses the beautiful Loggia dei Lanzi, which is adorned by Cellini's Perseus with The Head of Medusa, and Gianbologna's Rape of the Sabines.
