The day begins with a guided visit of the world-famous Accademia Gallery, which hosts Michelangelo's David along some of his other iconic sculptures, and paintings by Florence's great Renaissance artists. David is know the world over, and it depicts a young man whose intense expression of courage and his strong physique represents an unshakable faith in God. Michelangelo carved this impressive statue from a single block of marble in just three years, and it stands today as a testament to his skill and mastery.
In the afternoon we will continue our tour to the heart of the historic center, where the gothic Loggia del Bigallo awaits us in the Piazza San Giovanni, where you will discover the awe-inspiring monuments in the center of the Old Town.
The most spectacular of these monuments is the Duomo, with its beautiful Brunelleschi's Dome, an iconic landmark of the city. Continuing around the detailed facades of the Cathedral, you will come upon the elegant Giotto's Bell Tower and the Baptistery of San Giovanni, which is one of the oldest buildings in Florence.
We will continue the walk by touring the lively and bustling Via Calzaioli, where you will savor the sight of the imposing Orsanmichele Church, a fine example of Florentine Gothic art. The church is decorated with statues of patron saints and beautiful shrines, making it a true marvel of the period and a terrific photo opportunity. Next, we'll get to the busy straw market, Mercato della Paglia, where you'll be encouraged to rub the nose of the famous bronze boar statue and throw a coin in the fountain for good luck.
Moving on, you will see the imposing Ponte Vecchio, the oldest bridge in the city that is best known for hosting an array of beautiful jewelry shops. Finally, we get to one of the most magnificent squares in the globe, the Piazza Signoria.
